In such a society there is little marked difference of behaviour between the group which is experiencing puberty and the groups which are two or three years younger or older. The sudden bodily changes of adolescence do not appear to be accompanied by personality changes other than those following upon those social expectations of sexual functioning which are expressed in the random teasing of adolescents by adults. Boys and girls of sixteen or seventeen are interested in one another. The girl’s shamed avoidance of older boy-relatives and the antagonism towards younger ones, which were fostered by taboos at an earlier age, are replaced in public by a pleasurable shyness and embarrassment; but there seems an absence of anxiety, distress or fear.
