Disguised power The third dimension, the ‘disguised’ level, was very clearly regarded as a potential misuse of power and perhaps linked most overtly with this ‘problem of the power shadow’. Descriptions were littered with words such as ‘abusive’, ‘sneaky’ and ‘oppressive’: ‘I could be sneaky and get things my way. In fact, many of the very best trainers I have known have found the work too stressful to continue for more than a few years on a full-time basis. Perhaps acknowledging the reality of what training work is like and finding ways to support and prepare ourselves are far more constructive than merely trying to survive and cope; we can initiate further discussions, and develop further creative solutions.
